Exit Slip Aug 1

What aspects of class and or student blogging did you struggle with today? What went well? What could be improved upon?

  1. I ran into a few roadblocks today. The first issue was how to post the slideshow but I was able to work through it with the excellent help of my wonderful instructor.

I also ran into a little issue with the tutorial assignment, but this was mainly due to being self-conscious about my voice.

The next roadblock was not with an assignment but with how I intend to use Blogger. I want to have 6 different blogs, one for each class, but I do not want to repeat the formatting process for each one, such as the Guidelines page and setting up the widgets. I spent over an hour trying to figure out how to save a template that I could then apply to each blog. No success. I sent in a help request to Google so we will see what comes up. This is a key issue for me.

In addition to working on the template issue, I would love some help in figuring out how to post to multiple blogs at the same time. I will work with Composer but I prefer learning in a group to learning on my own when possible. I would also love some discussion and feedback from the class on the design/formatting of blogs. I would love to hear from people, after this week, how they envision using the blog as a tool. Finally, I would appreciate looking at people's webpage if they have one.

    1. Great comments Tryon. Being able to duplicate blogs and posting to multiple blogs is critical. I'm looking into the best way to do this. Rest assured that I'll figure it our since I plan to do this too!

  2. Good Afternoon,

My greatest struggle was getting the Java Script to download enabling Screencast-o-Matic to work. After restarting computer I got it to work. This seems to be the way I have learned to work on computers. Error after error until the solution presents itself.

I think, once one learns the concept of imbedding HTML code, the ease of the process is greatly increased. I really liked the ability to publish just one of my calendar sub categories rather than the entire thing.

Jill, you come into class well prepared. This makes a huge difference. I have experienced too many instructors just sort of making it up. Really like when you post the days lessons on your Blog as well as on the board. Gives me a direction to head.

    Good work!!

    1. Sorry about the Java issues. I'm glad you figured it out! Embedding html to very powerful. I always look for embed codes.

Thanks for the kind words. I always try to be prepared and sometimes I'm successful!

  3. Today I struggled with creating the turorial. I had issues capuring sound. I had issues uploading it to youtube. Overall it was difficult to create. Eventually it worked, but this was the hardest post to create for me so far.Everything we did today was very new to me, and there was a steeper learning curve for me. Getting through everything and making it work was the main thing that went well. I think I need some more work understanding the screen capturing aspect of the tutorial. I want to play around with that more. It looks like something that would be great to use in class.

    1. Where you successful getting it on youtube? The first time through, you have to log into your account and make sure your youtube channel is set up. I can help today.

Given that it's all new you did a great job! Keep up the good work :)

  4. Now that we are getting into more detail (things like modifying html code) it gets a little confusing. Once again though it's really just a matter of practicing. If I can manage to keep coming back to the blog throughout the rest of the summer I should be find. If I do nothing with it until in service week I'll probably be lost.

I think it is just a matter of picking out the things I really want to do with this and working with them over and over.

As long as you keep the website up and we are able to refer to the instructions when needed I think I'll be reasonably OK.

    1. One more thing. I need to set a timer and limit my time when coming back and tweaking things otherwise the rest of my life will pass before me while I dink around with this stuff.

    2. I can spend hours doing the smallest things. So I can use that timer too!!

I will keep the edtech website up and I'll also update it regularly.

  5. Hi Jill
I don't know where to even begin! I can't believe how much I've learned this week!!! When I left here on Monday, I felt so happy that I actually had a blog up and running. Little did I know, that was just the beginning. I am not a blogger, a twitterer, and have my own channel on You-Tube! My mind is going crazy with so many ideas of how to use this in the classroom. I need to remember to KEEP IT SIMPLE! (I think there should be a 12-step program for this!)

What did I struggle with today? I can't remember. I think just trying to remember all of the steps and the logistics of creating a channel in You-Tube.

Things I would like to see for tomorrow:
*TIME--time to create and change and play
*Twitter--how do I know what to look for when I look at the feed?
*Time to look at other blogs from the class
*Sharing how we plan on using this (this might help us to get ideas from others)....uh-oh....Keep it Simple

I think that's it! Thank you so much! This is a great class!!!

    1. Hi Angie,

I'm glad you're learning a lot. It's great to have you in class and get to know you too.

Keeping things simple is always a good rule of thumb and one that I live by!
We will have time to play today to share blogs and look at twitter.

  6. Wow, another great day loaded with information! The most challenging portion of today's class was the tutorial creation. My discouragement began when screencast-o-matic refused to load until Java was enabled which placed me behind class members. I'm not pleased with my video and plan to record a new take; a true test of my proficiency with loading tutorials.

I like how you had us create instructions for each task we accomplished today. I doubt I would have remembered all of the steps in the future. Discovering how to make a copy of our blog would be quite helpful.

Fortunately, work time has been incorporated into the schedule tomorrow. Here are some questions I have:

    1) Where do I find free clip art to add to my blog?
    2) What application was used to write on the screen when creating a tutorial?
    3) How do I make a copy of my blog?

Thank you for providing us with a wealth of information in an easy to understand format!

  7. Hi Jill,
As a person a bit intimidated with technology, I feel as if I am learning (albeit stumbling and fumbling, too) so many useful technological applications to incorporate in the classroom this fall. When I look at my blog, I can't believe that I have built it from these widgets and gadgets each day.
I always wondered how websites and pages were assembled online, now I know! Thx!

The most challenging session of class today was the creation of the tutorial video. I had trouble with the java plug-in and downloads which set-me back with the embedding of the document lesson. I was able to work on this at home but still think the sizing could be enhanced.

I look forward to some work time tomorrow to go back and improve sections of my blog.

    Questions:
    1. What is flubaroo?
    2. How does Google+ come into play?
    3. Any samples of provoking questions, learning logs, and reflective summary pages to share?

Thank you for modeling and providing excellent guided practice in a clear and straightforward manner.
    Eileen

I feel more secure now that we have added step by step instructions for each task and this will serve as an excellent reminder.

  8. I went through most of what was done today on my own and found that I was able to figure much of it out with no problem (or maybe just a few problems). Ultimately, I feel much more confident around a blog and feel that as I become more comfortable by using it I will become even more savvy.

The two areas where I struggled and may need some guidance tomorrow revolve around posting a google document to the blog and embedding an instructional video.

The Google document that I posted was way too small. I looked for ways to increase the size of the document, but I didn't get very far.

The Video I was able to get control over, but I think that my computer froze when I made my attempts. I may need a bit of help when there's time tomorrow to complete this assignment.

    Looking forward to it!

  9. Hi Jill,

You've reminded me how important it is to have a consistent format for class!!!!

Your tone was calm and you modeled a perfect format for a 90-minute class.

    1. Warm up questions for class discussion based on exit slips from the day before
    2. Complete agenda/objectives for the day so advanced students can work ahead and I can assist those who need step-by-step guidance
    3. Do the work
    4. Exit slip

I wasn't able to get slideshow to work because I fell behind. I'll do this tomorrow.

Wow! Thank you for every little thing, including flex start time.
